The BXIF provides hands-on workshops and trainings on topics including manufacturing, design and innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic democracy. Our workshops provide both technical skills training and business learning, and invite participants to think how digital technologies can be applied to community challenges. Unless otherwise specified, participants can attend workshops without having any prior experience. We also host community-building events including movie screenings, talks, and happy hours.

Past Workshops

Intro to CNC Machining | Weds, April 17, 6-9 pm

Machining, one of the fundamental processes of manufacturing, allows you to cut a raw piece of material into the shape you want. Using digital technology, you can design, manage, test, simulate, and fabricate projects faster than ever.

In this workshop, you'll work with CAD (computer-aided design) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software and our CNC (computer numeric controlled) router to design and cut a gearbox.

Intro to 3D Printing | Weds, March 20, 6-9 pm

You can make virtually anything with 3D printing—from hinges to bottle openers, mini catapults, and iPhone stands. Combined with the Arduino microcontroller, you can even make your own robot.

In this workshop, you'll learn how 3D printing and CAD (computer-aided design) software work, and you'll create, prep, and print your own design.

Intro to Electronics | Weds, February 27, 6-9 pm

Microcontrollers are the basis of almost all modern electronics and appliances—cell phones, refrigerators, TVs, washing machines, drones, and much, much more. Using Arduino, you can create custom microcontrollers for your own smart devices! The possibilities are truly endless.

In this workshop, you'll learn the basics of Arduino as we go step-by-step to build and write the code for a traffic light, a motion-detection alarm, and a photoelectric-sensor light switch.

Intro to Laser Cutting | Weds, January 23, 6-9 pm

Laser cutting is a quick and easy way to get started with digital fabrication. With just a few hours of instruction, you can make your own jewelry, key chains, lampshades, laptop stands, and even furniture! In this workshop, you'll learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to create your own custom designs and how to fabricate them on our Epilog laser cutter. You'll walk away understanding how to design and create your own projects using the laser cutter and the new fabrication possibilities the laser cutter opens up.

Intro to Digital Fabrication & Electronics

Ever dreamed of building your own robot, or wondered how to use a 3D printer? Ever thought about how technology could be applied to challenges in your day-to-day life?

The Bronx Innovation Factory is offering a hands-on workshop for young people to learn the basics of digital fabrication and electronics, as well as how these technologies can be applied to Bronx challenges.
